Chicago Steel Tape - CST Corporation was founded in 1903 as a manufacturer of steel measuring tapes made from the same wire used to make ladies' hoop skirts. The easily read tapes were designed to replace the survey chain, which was in use at the time. In 1995, CST acquired Berger Instruments, a German company that originally made armor, swords and guillotines in the early 1700's and later produced surveying, engineering, mining and scientific instruments. Skil Corporation - While watching workers cut sugar cane with machetes, an inventor named Edmond Michel figured there had to be a better way. Wen Products, Inc. - Founded in 1951, the folks at Wen "pioneered the electric soldering gun, electric jigsaw, chain saw, engraver, knife and wet wheel sharpener" and "introduced random orbit technology to the consuming public."
